Video Conferencing in Action

SERC's distance learning programs, all supported by teacher-developed curriculum, bring Smithsonian science into classrooms and homes across the country. By participating in videoconferences, you have the opportunity to talk with expert scientists and educators at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) and possibly venture into research areas restricted to on-site visitors.

SERC has wireless video conferencing equipment which allows for a unique learning experience. We offer videoconferences from a number of remote venues such as beaches, docks, research vessels, and forests.

Smithsonian scientists and education specialists directly link with your classroom using IP. Each informative videoconference lasts between thirty and sixty minutes, during which time students will participate in hands-on science demonstrations and interact with SERC staff.

SERC is currently offering the following videoconferences:

Videoconference Target audience
Chesapeake Bay

Grades 2-12

Aquatic Ecosystems: Putting the Parts Together Grades 4-9
Blue Crab Biology Grades 4-12
Forest Ecology Grades 5-12
Investigating Global Warming: Clues to a Changing Climate Grades 7-12

Technology
SERC uses a wireless battery operated PolyCom VSX 7000 connected through IP.

This summer we will be introducing our new Tactical Responder with LifeSize Express 220 using 3G VC equipment that was made possible by a grant from the Smithsonian Women's Committee. This new light weight portable technology will allow SERC staff to make connections from anywhere there is a 3G signal.

Costs
The fee for a videoconference depends on the curriculum materials you choose. Prices start at $150 per videoconference. Please contact us for more pricing details.

Contact Information and Scheduling
Videoconferences can be scheduled on any non-federal holiday of the year between 7:00AM and 6:00PM. If you're ready to sign up, please contact Mark Haddon 443-482-2218.
