SERC Scientists at Work

In this program participants are introduced to SERC and the research that is done here, and off-site, by our researchers in a hands on demonstration of the equipment that some of our researchers use. You'll put on tree climbing harnesses, learn how to tag a blue crab, and explore invertebrates of the bay. Great for young aspiring researchers!

| Peeking at Plankton (Ages 10-Adult) |

Ever wondered what microscopic creatures keep the bay running? In this program participants will take a plankton tow and then identify zoo and phytolankton under the microscope, just like SERC scientists. Learn why plankton are such a critical part of the Bay ecosystem.

| Oyster Homes (Ages 6-Adult) |

Oysters are a signature organism of the Chesapeake Bay, and of particular interest to SERC researchers. Learn about how oysters provide more than just food for people, they also provide homes for many different aquatic invertebrates. We'll examine an oyster basket and sort through the shells for white fingered mud crabs, fish, shrimp, barnacles, worms, and more.

| Explore what makes an insect an insect in this fun program. We will look at how insects are put together, the different types of insects you can find, and how insects are beneficial to nature. We'll ahve fun making a "Bug Band" and then we'll journy along our trails to search for insects to collect in our special insect jars (for release of course!). |

| Java History Trail Hike (Ages 8-Adult) |

Join us for a 1 ½ mile hike around the Java History Trail. Learn about the rich natural and cultural history of the area ranging from the early Native Americans to the modern SERC facilities, and the land's return to nature.

| Canoe Excursion (Ages 8-Adult) |

Participants will journey along the Rhode River by canoe, and visit a fish sampling station constructed by SERC researchers. We'll discuss the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay while looking for osprey, water birds, muskrats, water snakes, turtles, and much more. Limited to 16 total participants.

Students will conduct their own research by studying the water quality of the Rhode River and the fish and organisms living along its shores. Students will put on chest waders and to into the water to seine for fish, crabs, comb-jellies, and other Bay creatures.

| Blue Crab Lab (Ages 6-Adult) |

Blue crabs are the ambassadors of the Chesapeake Bay, and represent a rich cultural and biological resource. In this program participants will be introduced to blue crabs, their anatomy, life cycle, migration, and ecological importance. You will see two live blue crabs, and learn about them up close and personal.

This program is designed for younger children, with an emphasis on the letter "C" for Chesapeake and crab. We will read a short story, see a live blue crab, and then make our own take home craft so that we remember what we learn about the Chesapeake Bay.

| Fish are fun scaly creatures to learn about! In this program we'll learn about the different parts of a fish and how they are adapted for living in the Bay. We'll also explore the different types of fish found here, play a fun game, and make fish prints to take home. |
