Director of Education
BS Biology, MS Secondary Education, Towson University. Mark focuses on program development, funding and collaborating with other Smithsonian units as well as outside organizations. SERC’s Education Department includes a wide variety of public outreach and on-site programs, transdisciplinary STEAM education programs, distance learning virtual field trips and professional development for teachers.

Holly, Jane
School Program Coordinator
Jane schedules and coordinates the K-8 hands-on education programs at SERC. These include Exploring Nature (K-3), Estuary Chesapeake (4-6) and Marsh Explorations (6–8). She also oversees SERC’s Summer Camp program and develops curricula for new and existing activities.

McDonald, Karen
Outreach Coordinator
MS Biology (University of Central Arkansas), BS Environmental Science and Philosophy (Ferrum College). Karen coordinates all the groups that do not fall under the traditional “school” category, from senior programs to Pre-K and home school. This includes on-site programs for clubs, groups and organizations as well as mobile ecology programs (November through February in a 25-mile radius). Karen also coordinates Saturday programs for the general public, including guided hikes and canoe trips, and is in the process of writing science curricula for educators based on current SERC research.

Education Volunteers
Aquarium Keepers Alex Zerphy (left) and Richard Hohn (right) devote their time at SERC to maintaining our two display and teaching tanks, where rockfish, white perch, Norfolk spot, blue crabs, American eel, blennies, gobies, hogchokers, oysters and anemones all find a suitable habitat.
