Activity: Poetry for Everyone
SKILLS: Writing, describing, inventing
SUBJECTS: Language arts
DIRECTIONS:
Each person needs a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. Find a pleasant place to sit, either inside or outside. Close your eyes for a few minutes and imagine your favorite plant or animal. Imagine what it's like to be that plant or animal. Imagine its colors, its smells, its texture, its sound.
Now that you have an image, it's time to write a poem. This poem is called a "Diamante," and it shows that words are related to each other through shades of meaning. It follows a pattern in the parts of speech:
noun
adjective adjective
participle participle participle
noun noun noun noun
participle participle participle
adjective adjective

Here's an example:

living stretching growing
bird beak wing flight
