Step 3: Lab Analysis
After you've collected your samples, it is time to analyze them.
Depending on what kind of samples you have taken and what information you are interested in, you will analyze some samples on the boat (nitrogen en phosporus) or take a sample with you to analyze later. Phytoplankton samples, for example, are analyzed upon return to SERC, using the microscopes in the Reed Center.
Quality Assurance
As discussed in the previous step, quality assurance is an important part of the STAR program. The methods you use for sampling and lab analysis must be consistent with established methods for monitoring aquatic environments. The STAR program uses the methods and procedures described the EPA's Volunteer Estuary Monitoring, a Methods Manual.
What's next?
Now that you have collected your data, both in the field and through lab analyses, you are ready for Step 4: Data Analysis.
