Asteromphalus hookeri (photo on right by Dr. Deneb Karentz, University of San Francisco)

This centric diatom is quite distinctive with its radiating broad sectors. Note that the center of the diatom is divided in the same manner as the outer sections. It is oceanic and has often thought to be a tropical species. This sample came from the Palmer Bay area of Antarctica December 2004.
