Acnathes longipes

This epiphytic diatom was scraped off Zostera marina leaves from Jehu Pond, which is part of the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Reserve.

As the diatoms cover the blades of eelgrass, it blocks sunlight from reaching the leaves. This in turn prevents chlorophyll production and eventually the eelgrass dies.
