Strombomonas ovalis - live (apical view on right)

This genus has frequently been included in with the Trachelomonas depending on the criteria  considered. Unlike most Trachelomonas, this species has a clear, yellow or slightly brown lorica, which is soft rather than brittle. (See Freshwater Algae of North America, by Wehr in Taxonomic References).  Sample was collected in the outflow area of the Georgia Pacific paper plant on the St. John's river in March 2003.
