Melosira nummuloides

Usually an epiphytic, benthic species, Melosira can be lifted into the water column by tidal or current changes, storms or any activity in the water that would disturb the bottom or the plants where Melosira is attached. Photo on right is dividing cell. Average size 24.5µ wide, 45µ long, total volume 3.9 x 104. Temp. 22C, salinity 3ppt. Collected in May 2002 at near fish weir in Muddy Creek.
