Heterocapsa rotundatum bloom syn Katodinium rotundatum
H. rotundatum is a common bloom species in the Rhode River during winter months. The photo on the left was taken in January 2003. The bucket contains water from the SERC dock which exemplifies the characteristic star-formation of the congregating dinoflagellate cells on the surface. The bloom continued through March.
