Pyrophacus horologicum

Dinoflagellate usually found in higher salinities in the lower Chesapeake Bay. Drought conditions during late 2001 brought this species farther into the Bay to shallower warm waters. This sample was collected in September at Station 1A where the Rhode and West Rivers join the bay. It averages 45u long and 29.8u wide, with a total volume of 3.46x104. It has a distinctive plate arrangement when cleared. Click here for other views.
