I worked as an intern in the Ecological Modeling and Spatial Analysis Lab under the guidance of Don Weller and Matt Baker.  I completed a project entitled “Implications of Stream Map Resolution for Characterizing Riparian Buffers and Their Effects on Nutrient Discharge” as part of an ongoing project to better understand the flow of nutrients through the landscape in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.  I spent several weeks this summer deriving detailed stream maps from 30m Digital Elevation Models (DEM).  Using GIS techniques I also calculated a series of riparian buffer metrics based on land cover distribution alongside streams throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed.  The metrics generated based on three different stream maps were compared as were their correlation with nutrient concentrations in streams.
