SERC interns have gone on to become accomplished scientists and educators in their fields. Here's what some of them say about their time at SERC:
- Close relationships with my mentor and project supervisors, seminars given by other interns and scientists, and peer workshops allowed me to fully immerse myself in the culture of science for the summer. What an amazing experience.— Megan Lamb, Senior at Wesleyan University. SERC Intern 2003.
- SERC provided the perfect blend of guidance and independence to help prepare me for my career and future education plans —Mandy Clancy, SERC intern 2002.
- Working at SERC means learning to deal with and profit from others—from students, techs, other PI's and other Post Docs. —John Dolan microbial ecologist at the Laboratoire d'Oceanographie de Villefranche, France and Deputy Managing Editor of Aquatic Microbial Ecology / SERC Post-doc Fellow 1990-1991, SERC Senior Post-doc Fellow 1999-2000.

Ryan Szuch (Summer 1999 and 2000, with Tom Jordan) is a master's student studying soil science at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. His research involves the use of ground-penetrating radar to map wetland stratigraphy. The information gained should aid in the hydrologic restoration of the wetland. After working as a technician in the nutrient lab for several months in late 2000, he spent most of 2001 in Australia as a Fulbright Scholar. He was working at the University of New England (Armidale, NSW). He studied nitrogen dynamics in subsurface zones of streams. Ryan can be reached at rpszuch@unity.ncsu.edu.

| Katherine Wakelee (Fall 1990, with Greg Ruiz) died of cancer on 12/21/00. She had been a wildlife biologist doing field studies of birds. | Dorothy Wallace-Senft (Summer 1992 with Dennis Whigham). Dorothy responded via email and here was her response. "I am currently a seasonal plant biotech working for the NRCS (formerly the SCS) in Kenai, Alaska - we survey plants in different terrain and habitat types hoping to correlate it with the soils that are found in these sites. We're working from north Kenai up to Point Possession. We get around by hiking, using ATVs and helicopters. Since leaving SERC I have had 3 other internships, 3 volunteer positions and 12 different seasonal jobs in 10 states and have worked for 5 different federal agencies (not including SERC). Not too shabby, eh? Guess I can be pegged as a seasonal junky. In the winters I'm a cross country ski instructor - last winter I worked in Solitude, Utah and go to personally see the Olympics! Fabulous! My favorite position so far was being a plant bio tech in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge here in Alaska. I got to be dropped off by ski plane in the vast wilderness of the Sheenjek River valley o the south slope of the Brooks Range and do many fun and exciting studies working out of tents. Gorgeous place!!!! I also got to see the north slope and the Wind River areas. Tons of mosquitoes, but oh so vastly enriching. In the springs and autumns I return to Vermont where I visit my parents, siblings, and 5 nieces and nephews. It's really a pretty ideal life for me at the moment."

The property that SERC occupies was originally the Java Dairy Farm. This is a picture of a silo located at the corner of what is now the Mathias Laboratory. The silo and part of the building were removed in September, 1996.
