CITIZEN SCIENCE: SURVEYING PARASITES ON CHESAPEAKE MUD CRABS
Adult
Location: Reed Education Center
Start: 1:00PM
End: 4:00PM
An introduced parasite is affecting native mud crabs in Chesapeake Bay. The parasite eliminates the crab’s ability to reproduce and results in the crab caring for the developing larvae of the parasite. Both male and female crabs are parasitized and tricked into caring for the larval parasites. Join researchers at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center as they conduct surveys of White-fingered Mud Crabs in hopes of understanding how this introduced parasite affects the mud crab population. Volunteers will collect crabs from 10 sites over three days. Learn more and sign up on our website http://www.serc.si.edu/labs/marine_invasions/citizen_science/Parasite_project.aspx
