| abstract | The salinity monitors are part of Coastal Intensive Site Network (CISNet) at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD. The premise of SERC's CISNet program is that many of the human activities and natural processes that place stress on estuarine ecosystems result in characteristic changes in the optical properties of the water. Instrumentation has been installed to monitor light absorption and transmittance at nine wavelengths. Salinity monitors enable SERC scientists to quantify rates of water exchange between the Rhode River and Chesapeake Bay. |
